Count Your Blessings

by Sandra Hessedal

In 1897, Johnson Oatman Jr. wrote a song with the refrain, “Count Your Blessings, count them one by one, Count your blessings, see what God hath done!” Have you counted your blessings lately? Have they included food and shelter or are those two items “our due” because of where we were born? For many of the world’s people, food and shelter are truly “blessings” and perhaps far beyond their hope of obtaining BUT YOU can provide that hope and make that difference. You can help through “Harvest of Hands” with the work of your hands.

Another Success Story

Harvest of Hands-Nov. 4, 2006

It’s always an exciting day when the Harvest of Hands event happens. Diligent workers arrive on Thursday to gather tables and set them up to create a festive scene. The items for sale begin to arrive and the white elephant room is getting filled with a plethora of objects both large and small. The kitchen is bulging with ingredients for the brunch items that will become a meal that everyone will enjoy.

On Friday, much activity continues, price tags are attached to every item, every jar of jam, to items made by the many gifted members of Zion. The conversation is one of optimism and a last minute check to make sure all bases are covered. Yes, it is a labor intensive endeavor. Last year we had 151 workers, this year 144 . Many were new members of Zion.

The message as to why this all happens is never forgotten, we are a society of so much that it is one small way we can share and help the E.L.C.A. World Hunger Appeal. I hope all the members of Zion participated in some way. From peeling apples for the pies, bringing items to sell, cheese and eggs for the omelets, or ingredients for the egg roles, purchasing treasured items and so many more ways too numerous to mention.

Ah, Saturday! People everywhere greeting each other, enjoying coffee with friends and purchasing gifts for the holiday season. The silent auction items wait for more bids over the next week end, marvelous works of art!

I know everyone is interested in the bottom line-what will be our gift to the E.L.C.A. World Hunger Relief, as a result of this Harvest of Hands Event? As of this printing it is $14,033.51.

A sincere thank you to all persons involved in any way. Didn’t get to help this year? Next year sign up early as the chairperson this year, Joy Arens was so happy when many came through at the last minute.

The hungry children and families around the world thank you too. “When I am loving and serving others, I am loving and serving God. I will trust God and I will be of service to others.”
